Great Weather for Garden Chores
Beautiful September weather.
Time to catch up on mowing, and control any new weed sprouts in the new beds.
Dutch Hoe
Ran over the weed sprouts lightly with a Dutch hoe.
This tool looks unimpressive , but when you run it over the dirt in a scraping action it really dispatches all those weed seedlings. Without all the energy output of the regular hoeing.
Overwintering Plants
I have been potting up some of the plants I want to overwinter. So far a couple variegated leaf begonias, and a polka-dot plant. I need to be sure and pot the vining geranium. It has a beautiful dark red flower with a white splotch.
After the first frost is the time to dig up the dahlias, but that won’t be til next month….. I just don’t want to put it off (like last year).
There is only a margin of a couple weeks to put in newly divided perennials so that they have a good root start before winter….. so that is working itself to the top priority list.
Planting Trees and Shrubs
Trees and shrubs can be planted as long as there is unfrozen ground. Although they do better with a good start, too.
