Garden Update 4-08

This past Thursday was beautiful and I took advantage of the gentle weather to begin my garden activities for the year. Before the weekend rains was a good time to move some starts of lamium maculatum to an area that has dry shade, along the hot tub walkway. I organized my kids to help me pick up the many tree branches felled by the windy storms we’ve had in the late winter, and we scraped the leaves off the veggie garden.

I will need to step up my garden work this week to get the spring vegetables in… time for broccoli plants and lettuce seedings. The ground has been too wet to till and now we have rain falling again, so I will follow my plan of planting where the wet leaves kept the weeds down, instead of trying to till wet ground.

We generally cleaned up the yard, and Handyman put the mowing machines in working order, fixed the tiller’s flat tire, and now we are ready to roll come the next break in the weather. I pruned some of the crabapple trees, which are young and need shaping. Not the best time for pruning, but I am behind.

The white rabbit syndrome. Speaking of rabbits, we are seeing more, especially since the passing of my good old dog, Samson. He was the best dog, it will be hard to find one I appreciate as much.

I also purchased some chick feeding equipment in hopes that I will order chicks soon. I love fresh eggs, but our chicken coop is now in disrepair; I actually want want of those movable frames I saw at my neighbors house, ideal for gardening AND egg laying chickens :)

Oh, hi there!

I was a garden blog pioneer, and began writing on this blog in 2003. Before that I had begun a garden website that has been at its own domain since 2006, Ilona's Garden.

I still love writing, gardening, and art after all these years, although travel and grandchildren have become a big part of my life, now.
