After a blustery week of freezing weather and snow, it is now a warm and melting weekend that makes me feel spring is just around the corner. I think I will plant some seeds mid-month of March… this year I would like to try some heirloom tomatoes and maybe daisies for the perennial gardens.
I need to get my light setup connected together- a timer and multiple outlet connection is about all I need to be ready to go on the seed flats.
I hope my lavender plants have done well- they had to survive the deep freeze without snow cover earlier in the winter.
I am planning on devoting more time to the garden posts this week.. it has just been a hectic time lately with my energies distributed elsewhere, but I have so many thoughts on gardening that I really have to write them down! I have plans for the garden here including planting some additional hardy roses, and a new idea of using some of the newer heucheras that have the beautiful variations of foliage. I was thinking of having a dooryard garden space devoted to them, instead of the annuals I usually place there. I thought it might produce a “Persian carpet” type of look.
The soil has remained very wet this season, so there hasn’t been time to till it in readiness for the 2008 vegetable garden. I was also thinking of using the old veggie garden space for a cutting garden – just planting a mixture of annuals this year, but I won’t be able to do that if we don’t have a space tilled up in the old old vegetable garden ( the space devoted to it years ago). The front garden will still need major renovation work: removing perennial weeds that took hold , rescuing the surviving plants, and replanting the area. I am thinking of putting stronger growers in the place of the ones that -while very pretty in their time- just couldn’t stand up to the lack of diligent cultivation. The conditions tend to be somewhat dry in that flower bed- and thus contributed to the weakening of plants that need more water. Xeriscaping must prevail.
I really should stop going out of town during prime spring garden time, too. But this year I hope to have some helpers, aka husband and kids. Hope springs eternal they say- and I live to prove that truth, it seems. I will need them if I am going to accomplish everything I hope to this growing season.
