Classic Vintage TomatoI planted my tomato plants late, and I put them in the wrong place, since last years upheaval of my garden ( for those who don’t know: new septic system and garage remodel wrecked havoc on my vegetable garden space). Yet, I ate my first vine-ripened tomato of the season. Oh what bliss… really, tomatoes from the garden are what gardening is all about.
Forget that almost everything I do is geared toward ornamental gardening… I don’t think I enjoy anything quite as much as a summer tomato with sea salt.
Vegetable Garden Report
The story is that I planted several hybrid types which I promptly forget the names of since they are all new to me ( see the former post on garden journaling).
The season wasn’t kind so far. Admittedly, the fact is that they are in part shade in an area where I had been composting leaves. I tell you I have the tallest peppers with the biggest leaves and no fruits than anyone I have ever seen!
The related tomato plants are fruiting well, but need more sun. I picked a few of the biggest green ones to ripen inside. There is no way I will share with the bugs and the “wildlife” that likes to pick off my fruits before I do. Let them eat squash I say….
My one first tomato was so fabulously good that I have to scrounge around to get the name ( I bought it from the neighbor’s greenhouse -so that shouldn’t be terribly hard if I don’t find the label). It was red, it was meaty and smooth, it was delicious! One of those bumpy-shouldered old fashioned kind.
How Did That Happen?
I planted what turned out to be the little salad tomatoes, too. I don’t usually plant that type. They are prolifically fruiting and I should get some good tomatoes from them if we have enough sun. I haven’t tasted any of them yet. a little green. I have a smooth round one that has nice clean fruits, but again, too green to give a taste test. Usually, I get ‘Better Boy’s or ‘Early Girl’ and I have always really liked them, but this year I went “exotic”.
Keep tuned. I’ll try to get the names of my choices… I had saved those labels around here somewhere I think….
