On the subject of things in the garden, I know that fall is truly here. The barn swallows are gone. This is the final sign of falls arrival for me. We had our first frost warnings the last couple days, but my nasturtiums are still blooming. I had brought the tomatoes in and they are ripening in my kitchen.
The Zinnias are done, they did end up with mildew and so I spent a little time today pulling them up along with their alyssum companions. The alyssums were all gone to seed, which means I will see volunteers next year. YAY!
I have a last vase of zinnias in Mardi Gras colors …. they just need some filler sprays of the purple asters which are still blooming nicely.
I did not have my usual enthusiasm for gardening this year, which is a real pity because the weather was perfect. The wonderful thing about the garden is that it waits for you. It will be there for next years plans and renewed interest. It was just that this year was so emotionally and physically taxing. I miss the gardens quiet and the satisfying work that shows results and gives something back.
Not all efforts in life give something of health and beauty back to you, but puttering in the garden does. It was a wonderful place to sit in the sunshine when I needed to calm down and drink in the warmth of the day and smells of my flowers. I simply ignored the weeds this year, and , well, I did enrich the younger kids for some weeding time. After all, we can’t let everything just go to seed! Even if I am!
