It rained again last night. It seems to be raining so much that I no longer dare to work this garden clay/mush. The lake in the field has seemed to become permanent…. and yes I am complaining because it is finally getting to me.
We simply mow when we can around here. One plant that really took some grief is the Oenothera speciosa, I looked at it one day and it was fine and starting to bloom…. checked on it again – while weeding between thunderstorms- and it is eaten to nibs. Some sort of small shiny black beetles. My guess is that the growth simply became too lushly waterlogged and inviting. I hope the roots will revive the bare stems. I liked the plant.
When the heat hits I expect to see disease problems, but I don’t want to anticipate. As a matter of fact, I am going on a short vacation and will return to an overgrown garden. I’ll think about that tomorrow. I mean when I get back…. I was just practicing my Scarlett O’Hara impression. I am excited about going to the ocean. I tried to talk the family into Maine -but they won’t have it…. we are going South.
I hope I can take it. I could never live in the South Eastern part of the US. I can’t take the heat, but I believe the ocean will make it alright for the short time we will be there. I am a snowbird, for sure.
The palms of the South really do look beautiful, though. And anyone from Ohio would be glad to escape the rain for a bit. Although ( don’t tell) I really am loath to leave my place. I like Ohio and my garden. I like the intensity of green, and this is prime rose bloom season up here. The rain has made them shatter somewhat, but this is the best time of the summer in Central Ohio. It usually doesn’t rain this much….really!
….a horrible thought just struck me: what if I take the rain with me? What if it rains during my vacation, only to turn sunny here?
