Brief Garden Update

by Ilona Erwin Filed Under: Uncategorized

This is just a brief overview of what is going on in Ohio gardening world, as reflected in my garden. I am in full work mode, and still so much remains to be done. Ohio is heating up and the ground is a bit more dry than is good; an omen of the predicted droughty summer conditions?

I bought about three flats worth of flowers, almost done preparing the lavender walk for the new plants: tore out the old, weeded, edged, dug up the ground to a fine tilth, will add a bit of amendment to the planting holes and pop in the little plants. Then I will try to add in cuttings from the remaining older plants that survived- as long as everything has to be kept watered anyway. I purchased ‘Munstead’ and ‘Hidcote’ varieties, which are types purchased in the past. Maybe the variety makes a difference in the winter survival rate. I talked with a lady from Fredricksburg who lost her lavender this year, too. We commiserated. She spoke of one of her neighbors who grew lavender in a circle garden and let all go to seed each year, resulting in lots of new plants in spring. Wish I knew her secret!

I also have planted regular “lavandula vera” in the past. This time I made up my mind to note things in written form { a garden journal!- only in hard copy) to follow the progress of the different varieties of lavenders in my garden. The folly of thinking you will remember what was planted where or trusting those cheap little plastic markers… forget that.

I’m going to put together some more pots;today I fertilized the finished ones with fish emulsion. Then, pictures very soon… in the meantime I have some pictures of containers that I took at public places last year- will post those as soon as I get back to the computer. They have to be resized for the web. Might as well report on Innis Gardens Metro Park while I am at it- I have some nice pictures from there…sounds like a plan.

My husband has moved all my pots off the deck and is pressure washing today. Then a new coat of stain for that and some of the furniture. but that is an account for the do-it-yourself blog. After the promised posts here, I think I will feel like putting some work into that blog. I feel chatty of late;)
