Odd Corners of My Garden Life

by Ilona Erwin Filed Under: Uncategorized

It is the midst of fall, and the rains have begun. This years tree color was pretty, but not the best, since many trees turned color a bit early and many more lost their leaves early. It was another one of those years that the crabapple trees had little cotton ball puffs of bloom. I bet it is due to stress, since many of those trees lost leaves early on.

I brought my houseplants in, but haven’t found winter places for all of them, the one I always give preeminence is the Ficus Benjamina – weeping fig. I have had that tree for the longest of any of my plants, about twenty five years now. Probably due to the fact that I did not over water it, and treated it rather cruelly with neglect while having my children and growing my outside gardens. But it seems to thrive on outdoor porch living during the summer, and an east window during the winter. With deep draughts of water between rather long time of drying.

Or maybe it is just tough.

The wedding date has been moved to April. I am much happier with this…. flower price and selection should be much better. Now I just have to find out what flowers are best in April. I have put together a partial centerpiece plan: flat glass holder, centered square lantern with votive candle, black river rocks sprinkled with some red glass pebbles for sparkle, two moss covered mounds to hold the flower arrangements. I haven’t decided whether three or five roses would work well… sprays of fern and some light sprays of smaller flowers. Twisty-turny twigs would be neat. I’m going to do a mock-up in a week or two.

That is the story from my garden this weekend…. that and the fact that I will need to get the rakes and the leaf vacuum going soon. Maybe tomorrow. I hate to sound ungrateful, but now I wish I had gotten the self-propelled type. It is always something, isn’t it? The eyes of man are never satisfied.

=======I almost forgot===========

I worked on my garden webpage this last weekend. The result is that the rose poems page is very different with a few additions. And the rose growing pages are improved, as well.
