Tra-La-La

28.02.05 | Ilona Erwin | No Comments

It’s still cold, I suffered a major personal failure this week… awww, so what? I had flowers left over from said failure and so used them to mock up the table centerpieces for the wedding. Took pics-which will be forthcoming. I know, promises.

Anyway, it looks good, but the container will be different- same shape and depth, but not one of my square baking pans ( hey- I didn’t decide on the container, just the shape, until recently) I decided that the two dollars or more per round glass plate was too costly when multiplied per table. We will see. I’ll spring it if the other idea doesn’t work. But my husband about choked over the cost of the wholesale flowers; and I didn’t even order all of them ( oopsie:) think: frog boiling…slo-o-o-owly.

I do need to trail some ivy or something over the sides just a bit more than my mock-up, but I didn’t have ivy handy that I wanted to waste. (I plan to denude my houseplant ones for the sake of the wedding). I think I will spray the paper lanterns with flame retardent spray, too, not that they are a problem, I just think margin of caution is a good thing. There are certain types of excitement we can do without.

I used the general colors of pink/red/green, but I had lilies and asters instead of the roses that will be in the real centerpieces. That sounds like it isn’t really interchangeable, but, believe me, it is. Wax flower and misty statice for filler, and some green foliage I don’t know-looked like boxwood or something. Effect was good.

Indoor flowers make up for the chill of the weather; not totally but good enough.

afterthought: the reality of costs is that making your own arrangments is not cheap. There is a lot of work, and you have to buy lots of supplies that you wouldn’t normally think of unless you do a lot of floral work anyway; things like floral clay and tape, picks, foam. Flowers online are something that isn’t totally predictable. I ordered the main one from Growers Box and will report on how they measure up. I will additionally order from 2G Roses or fiftyflowers. I might make a run on Sam’s Club. depends. If it were a month later- I would have plenty of flowers to cut myself. But such is life….
