The Nuisance of No Electric

Blogging is spotty since our electrical power went out a few days ago. Since then a generator hook-up allows for short periods when the computer is allowed time ( can’t overload the generator and the refrigerator takes precedence… and occasionally other appliances). Electrical power is also needed for the pump to pull water from the well… but we haven’t managed that yet, and have no running water. That means some of the gardening is spotty, also. My container plants have to languish… trying to clean dishes, the bathroom, and ourselves takes all efforts at hauling water… from the kids swimming pool, no less! One of those collapsible ones, it holds plenty of fairly clean water… but my joints aren’t up to carrying large buckets of water, so the plants are left to nature. (I feel I’m not far behind, but that is just my spoiled modern habit of life talking).

People who talk about a “simple life” as reverting to old time ways don’t really mean “simple life”. The range of skills necessary and the effort involved in everyday tasks is anything but simple in my humble opinion.

Right now, I’m all for trying to book a hotel room just for the luxury of a hot shower where I can fully wash my hair and then use a real hair dryer to blowdry it with lovely warm air.

I did manage to weed a bit, but then was nonplussed at how to get my hands to look clean again. Forgot to use the garden gloves-won’t do that again.

I expect that this won’t last much longer… the outlook at worst is supposed to be three to four more days, but I’m hoping “any minute now” ;) At some point we will look back on this as one of those memorable times. Maybe laugh. One thing for sure: we will buy our own generator and have an emergency plan in place to take the irritation and difficulty out of the equation of negotiating life without modern convenience.

Then, again, we say to each other: “Well, at least it isn’t Texas”. things could always be worse.

Oh, hi there!

I was a garden blog pioneer, and began writing on this blog in 2003. Before that I had begun a garden website that has been at its own domain since 2006, Ilona's Garden.

I still love writing, gardening, and art after all these years, although travel and grandchildren have become a big part of my life, now.
