As Hurricane Ivan pushed through the Southern states, we were grazed with some rain, wind, and cooler temperatures. Pretty normal, really, and in sharp contrast to the very harsh circumstances that so many people have to face in rebuilding their lives and homes.
Sometimes it makes me feel guilty that I worry about my little problems. Like the fact that my optimism for the gardens evaporated when I saw my Blue Wave Hydrangea, that I had been coddling along, all smashed to the ground. And a large portion of the pyracantha that “just fell off somehow”. I am now not sure about how much I will be able to restore this season. Sometimes I think those cloddy workers boots are made to smash and destroy, like some cartoon Transformers, or something. Boom! Pow! So much for the gardening efforts of the past few years…..
Well, the house looks nice in its new coat of paint. At least I have a house!
Then I will get the ground ready for its winter time rest. Plan to do it a little early this year. Might as well. I like the neat , clean look of the mulched garden, and then maybe I can look at the bones of the garden and dream for next year……
Which reminds me: I had taken some books out of the library and found a very nice gardening book. One that is really worthwhile, possibily because it collates many famous gardeners advice on gardening design and general tips. It is called Designingborders by Noel Kingsbury. Has all the illustrious gardeners of renown: Hobhouse, Brookes, Oudolf, and others. Really a good book. I also found one I like – enough to buy- on Pruning. These are two books I would like in my own personal library…. and I can’t say that about too many that I have read of late. I just don’t need another glorified magazine spread, you know?
