This is such a neat idea- I have never seen anything quite like it. Not sure how well it would work where there is serious frost action, but I wonder if something similar couldn’t be used with effect?
About Ilona Erwin
I was a garden blog pioneer, and began writing on this blog in 2003. Before that I had begun a garden website that has been at its own domain since 2006, Ilona's Garden.
I still love writing, gardening, and art after all these years, although travel and grandchildren have become a big part of my life, now.

I love it… the bummer is when one of the pots crack. HOW DO you replace it?
Great Share – Can’t wait to get digging in the dirt. HOW ABOUT YOU?!
I just love this! What a wonderful way to add to a wall. Great idea!
i have seen this done on a broad rock staircase, with small areas of rocks removed and planted
with low growers and creepers,
like the thymes, various sedums, chamomile and thrift [armeria]. stairs were quite passable,
but small patches grew down the steps in a random way. very nice!
sort of like a rock garden on the wide stone steps.
ilona, thanks for the L/j comment.
i am surprised at how much i been given/learned from his generous teachings in such a short time.
i will miss him. j.
