When is my first fall frost?

07.10.09 | Ilona Erwin | 3 Comments

Well, that depends. In areas of Ohio you can expect it on the approximate dates in the following table.

About Ilona Erwin

I was a garden blog pioneer, and began writing on this blog in 2003. Before that I had begun a garden website that has been at its own domain since 2006, Ilona's Garden.

I still love writing, gardening, and art after all these years, although travel and grandchildren have become a big part of my life, now.

the govt. map is right-on. we
usually have a light frost around
    mid-october, followed by plenty
of time for peppers and eggplants
    to keep producing. however, it’s
    sunny and 78′ today…so i am not
    too concerned.
    our first REALLY cold
    [hard frost]can come as late
    as thanksgiving week.
that’s what i like about the south!

quite a transition back from the “tropics”, eh, ilona?

As you can see we are liable for frost any day now. I was surprised that the autumn tints were burnishing the leaves in Georgia already. We have only slightly more color here (but it was dark as we pulled into Central Ohio).

Yes, it was quite a transition all right! My tootsies are COLD!

I wish I could have shoehorned in a visit with you- but we had back to back birthday + family things. Too much for one little week. I’ll link to some family pics so you can see 🙂
